Before we start

With CORE, you will format books in a different, more efficient way than previously. You do however need some preparation before you get going with your publisher.

  • The layout of all books created via CORE is based on graphic design. Together with the publisher, you perform a content analysis in which you determine the InDesign templates that will be used. Or, to put it another way, you determine how the books are going to appear. The InDesign templates are more or less fixed, but you can adapt them per book. This analysis is essential for your whole preparation.
  • In addition to InDesign templates, you also create a Word template with macros. These are important tools for the editor to be able to work efficiently and comfortably.
  • An important part of CORE is the online environment. Not only “roles and rights” are defined in it. Also consider the way in which graphic design is chosen. Together with the publisher, you set this up according to the latter’s wishes.

Besides all the technical aspects, it is of course important that everyone involved understands what is being requested. Training, education and assistance for project managers, editors and correctors are definitely part of this!

How does automatic book layout work with CORE?

1. Manuscript

The editor starts out from a strong foundation. That’s why it’s important that he or she structures the manuscript with a Word template that you have prepared. This makes the rest of the process effortless and for a large part automatic.

2. Upload

The editor logs in to the CORE platform, creates a new book project and uploads the structured Word file. The editor chooses an InDesign template in CORE, after which the platform automatically generates a proof.

3. Corrections

InCopy readily enables the editor to make corrections in the source file.

4. Design proof

After all textual corrections have been made, you receive the message that the files are ready to be checked by you. You get rid of all graphic glitches and process any extras. The process with corrections can be repeated several times until the file is ready for printing.

5. Final PDF

The editor does a manual layout check. Everything shipshape? Then you subsequently send the customer the print-ready file and ePub version.

6. Archiving

Project complete? Your customer can also perform the archiving in CORE; that way he or she has constant access to all files.
